Family Counselling

When working with a family I offer a safe and supportive atmosphere which, hopefully will help family members to share and communicate more effectively. I aim to be as impartial in my work as possible so that every member feels that their opinion is heard and of value. In the work I try to identify and explore patterns of belief and behaviour in roles and relationships which may be having a negative effect. I am trained to work Systemically which means that the cultural beliefs of the unit is taken into consideration, as too is the context in which the unit lives. Together the family can find new tolerances or more constructive behavioural/communication patterns.

Along with a Systemic approach I use an integrated method depending on which I believe maybe most useful for the family. I am very drawn to early development attachments and how these replay from generation to generation, with particular interest in how these maybe unconsciously playing out in the present. Together we will address these negative patterns and explore new beliefs, behaviours and relational interaction. It is very much a collaborative effort to effect positive change.

Although we may explore the past it is the present and the future that is the focus.

Some issues that a family may bring to counselling are:
Parenting difficulties. Changes in the family. Couples and marital difficulties. Adoption.
Alcohol and substance abuse. Behavioural issues. Lesbian and Gay family issues.

Traumas within the family. Tension in relationships.
